Yes, it's true. I won this week's Haiku Monday and once I picked myself up off the floor, it took only a few hours to confirm the theme:
Because it's no joke, we truly get a boat load of it here in the Pacific Northwest, so once Moi gave me her approval, it was decided:

Because it's no joke, we truly get a boat load of it here in the Pacific Northwest, so once Moi gave me her approval, it was decided:
RAIN!
And while I'm thrilled to be hosting, I'm very aware of my lack of experience/expertise when it comes to judging most anything (unless it has to do with plastic or small dogs) and that's why I'm bringing in a Guest Judge to do the hard job of picking a winner. He's really smart, a published poet, knows lots of big words and I think, BIG DADDY, will do a great job.
The rules:
I'm going with the classic 5-7-5 and nothing else. Please only give Big Daddy one Haiku to judge, but post as many as you wish. Just let us know which one is the one you're officially entering. If there is a tie, then visuals will help determine the winner. We are closing the doors at 10:00 p.m EST. The winner will be announced on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
And what does the winner get?
Not only the honor of claiming the badge:
![]() |
| and it's a very cool badge |
But also a copy of Big Daddy's recently published book of poetry.
For reals!
I hope you all participate this week. Tell your friends! Writing a Haiku is not only easy, but really fun. Trust me, I used to think it was hard, and OK, it still is to me, but still,
It's fun!
XOXO

We actually had some rain here yesterday along with some spectacular lightning.
Looks like Henry has worked himself into the pack quite nicely. When Lola was added to the staff, RJ hissed at her for two years.
Have a wonderful trip.
It's been damp here all week. This morning...sunshine, thank goodness.
Why are you surprised you won? Youse a talented lady!
Have a fab weekend refereeing your pack! xxx
We had a tiny bit of rain yesterday! Thankfully very little, because the temp is around the freezing mark (which is well above normal for this time of year). Having lived in the Vancouver area for 3 1/2 years, I am all too aware of life on the Wet Coast. I froze because of the dampness. Moved back to Winnipeg, where winters are much colder, but so dryer!
Coco looks rather maternal in that last photo. Mickey, on the other hand, looks like he's just putting up with the kid.
Have a wonderful weekend! I'm sure Mr. Boxer will do fine. :-)
We had snow. Duh :o)
Henry is really a little heart breaker. And is that a trick of the camera or is he almost as big as Mickey?
I like the Haiku theme very much. I'll be up late Sunday, early Monday. Enjoy!
Happy 100th!
The little Icon who could.
When It Rains It Pours.
I'm UP with charming visuals!
It may rain or snow here tonight. That's why I picked yesterday to send back my waterproof jacket as the zipper was sticking.
You are smart, you should always pick a dog small enough to hold out the window with one hand on days you don't feel like walking. Mine weighs eighty pounds. Going to the vet involves power lifting.
Didn't see Troll had left his haiku. I was determined not to put up the first one.
Bare feet slap pavement
nimbly dancing over worms.
Melting clouds murmur.
@Troll and Curm: You all are so early, it's LAST YEAR fer cryin' out loud.
@Moi...LOL!
I read somewhere, a long time ago, that another haiku form is 5,7,5,7,7,5 (I don't remember what it's called). Aaaanyway, you mentioned that no one ever wrote a haiku/poem for you, so I did and I used the longer form so not to confuse it with my official entry.
********
there's a girl in the
PNW who sees more rain than all of
you. And still she smiles and
tosses tennis balls, slowly sipping soy vodka.
********
As Boneman would say... ta-da! :-)
Plus, I can't even say this is a suck-up because you're not judging. heh.
Have a great weekend!
Great subject, will see what I can come up with!
Meanwhile, I am loving LOVING the Henry pics. Him so cute! And does it seem that Coco has settled down with him around? You are very evil for giving me puppy fever.
LX - I love lightening and we rarely get it here. Dogs are more pack animals than cats so I get the hissing. Hell, I hissed at my little brother when he arrived for about four years.
Roses - YOU have a lovely weekend too. xoxo.
Ponita - I totally get the wet cold vs. dry cold. It seems there are weeks/months that everything is soggy. I know Henry and the rest will be fine (right?) I just feel a little guilty for giving him three dogs (and two are special needs.) But I think it will be harder on me. Ha!
Moi - Henry has gotten leggy over the past week. But he's still light as a feather. Have a fabulous weeekend. xoxo
Troll - of course you are. and I think picking the Salt Girl was a good direction. Have a great weekend.
Curmudgeon - I just read one reason small dogs are hard to house break is becasue they picked up and carried outside. They need to WALK. *sigh* BUT, I soooo agree about the ease of managing them when you need them to do something they don't want to do. Alhtough Lucy is good about resisting being stuffed into a carrier. All four legs go out like a cat. Thanks for your Haiku! Have a great weekend.
Moi - I told Big Daddy that Haiku Monday kinda starts Friday.
Jean - AWWWWWW you wrote a haiku for me. :-) And I know why, so thank you. Why isn't Boneman entering this contest? Go tell him to start writing. You have a great weekend too. xoxo
Pam - NO! enjoy the puppy pictures and do yourself a favor. Henry just peed on a clean blanket in my office 45 mintues after "going outside." *sigh* I think he was excited because he was playing rough with Coco. Still.... he's young and I'm... getting older by the minute. :-) Looking forward to your Haiku and have a great weekend.
I'll be up soon with pics, of course. What a great theme!
GG
I invented rain!
Better rain than snow i would say but last night and this morning we here in south east Ontario we got both.
I knew i should have ordered sunshine and bikinis.
I'm guessing it was due to the debate down in Florida last night.
Newt can really expel alot of hot air.
But of course--RAIN!! how perfect is that?
We had us'uns some rain today-finally, as we've been near'bout at drought status.
Big Daddy? Well, welcome aboard!
Have a great weekend wif' yore siblings, B- Babe.
See y'all Monday.
Raindrops so many
Raindrops It feels like raindrops
Falling from my eyes
Good afternoon Boxer,
Have a fun road trip. Who's driving?
It just finished raining sideways here. Now It's sunny and the wind is really blowing, its supposed to go to gale force by sunset.
Dog sitting for four?
A rainy maker's mark.
Mr. Boxers reward
Well,
Troll or Karl already won.
Seriously good stuff.
Dee Clark ... not so much unless Big Daddy has a nostalgia thing for pop music lyrics.
A sibling get away without dogs sounds fun. But why does Coco go to your bid partner? Does Mr. Boxer have a limit on how many dogs he caters to at one time?
You could tell him the Big Dawg over in Jawga has to deal with, um, big dogs and chickens.
Love the picture of your babies napping.
Blessings on your weekend!
Boxer said...
Grumpy Granny - Yay! can't wait. Thanks.
Al Gore - then I'm more pissed off at you than ususal.
Walker - I couldn't take both wet and cold. And all politicians blow hot air. All of them. Have a great weekend. Write a Haiku?
Aunty Belle- I've been reading about your need for some water, so I'm glad it's coming your way. A weekend with my siblings is always a good thing. xoxoxo.
Dee Clark - oh, there must be a cloud in my head.
Karl - we take turns and rotate front seat to back seat. We're very polite that way with each other. They are all my best friends and I won the lottery with them. And their spouses are all fabulous too. LOVE the Haiku for Mr. Boxer. bwahahaha. Is that your official one or did you just knock that out for funzy? Batten down your hatches this weekend and don't chase Mrs. Karl around outside on the deck... no falling overboard.
Fishy - I did it mostly for Coco - she loves her ball throwing time and we have a small crew (cuz we small) coming in tomorrow so she'll be happy. Mr. Boxer said he could handle them all, but this relieves some guilt on my part? and it's alllll about ME not feeling guilty. :-) YOU have a great weekend too and I look forward to your Haiku(s.)
Son of post man and Formica face. what a mix. I wonder if Al ever had a face lift. I hope so.
We don't worry too much about rain but heavy snow pack in the mountains is critical. We are almost always in drought. Hon has written fifty articles about giving our water away and goes to more meetings than an AA member. We have about a third of the farms we used to.
We've had so much rain here lately that we might as well be in the PNW. The sun did peek out today though. I was flabbergasted by the bright beams. I'll try to be in.
Your doggies sure are cuties.
Nice theme Boxer. Makes me think of several rainy moments. I think the haiku will come out of peaceful rain rather than violent rain, though.
For some reason Curm brought back a childhood memory - how we used to catch fishing worms. On an evening after a nice t-storm we would go over to our neighbor's carefully manicured yard barefoot. We padded around with our bare feet in the dark to find nice big nightcrawlers, and would trap them with our toes until we could grab them with hands and drop them in a can. With practice, I got pretty good at catching doubles with my toes! Ha, ha, hadn't thought of that recently.
We had FREEZING RAIN this week.
Followed by a heavy snowfall.
First off, Congrats on winning last week! =)
The theme for this week is very inspiring; I like rain.
In fact, it was raining yesterday morning .... then it switched to snow.
I swear, this has been the oddest winter I have ever experienced!
I am totally in puppy porn heaven!
*sigh*
They're all so precious!
Henwy has really shot up! WOW!
I like roadtrips! Have fun with your family and be safe! =)
ps/Karl, your Haiku for Mr. Boxer is is fantastic! =)
eye rain. eyes rain tears

have you ever watched

Posting with visuals will happen early Monday morning.
I like that last one Jean. Awesome.
Thank you, Curm!
I'm UP!

Hi Boxer,
Here is one for review. I'll have to decide later which to give to Big Daddy for judging.
Daffodil Drizzle:
Endless spring drizzle
brings forth saffron daffodils,
counterpointing greens.

Here is the other:
Tamarack Gold:
Montana larches,
where elk wander in fall rains,
pave trails with bright gold.
http://serendipitouswildmoments.wordpress.com/2012/01/28/tamarack-gold/
I can't decide at the moment which of the two I should make the entry - maybe someone will help me.

Right on Czar.
it's raining haiku

come get your pen wet.
I am clearly late because I see everyone posted many lovely haikus. I love the theme. My haiku is:
Ephemeral rain
Gifted by nature. It's our
Elixir of life.
I have two more haikus on the blog ( + visuals ) but they were made just for fun. They aren't good enough:)
Good luck to everyone!:D
Nice going! Csar, this week you are overachieving with your collateral materials, yes??
I'm up.
Silver sparkle drops
cascade like dewy diamonds.
Gutter's wet treasure.
I've never written a haiku before but here goes:
frozen rain drifts down
dry as a naked white bone
melting in spring time
Congrats on your win last week, Boxer!!!
Here is my haiku:
Droplets of merit
Scour my skin like fresh napalm
Drawing my demise.
Sorry I've missed the last 2--no internet for one week and life got busy on the other. Chickory told me to participate, so I'll do my best. Love to all.
Wow! What a great turn out! Thanks to Ponita for her first Haiku. Nicely done. And Hello to Susan B and I'm glad Chickie got you to participate.
Also happy to see Czar, Anya, Serendidipty (which one is in, pal?)Fluerdelo, Curmudgeon, Grumpy Granny Jean and Moi (xoxox)!
And Boney? I'm just glad to see anything from you.
It's only Sunday, so don't fret. It's not called Haiku MONDAY for nothing!!
So amazed and impressed with you all.
Torrential downpour...
Two umbrellas in the car
Way over yonder...
I don't know how to include visuals in comments, so should I put an image up on my page when I enter into the next contest? I'm content to leave the one I entered her without an image. I hope I'm doing this right.
Foamy! Yay! Thanks.
Susan B - the visuals would be posted on your blog, but do you have one? if not,you can send me the visual if you'd like: pnwgal07@yahoo.com. and thanks!
Really good Ponita! I'm glad you came to the party.
Susan, Wow! Pride?
I meant is it about pride?
Twelve summers have passed
since we caught rain in our mouths,
hiking across Spain.
I'se up wif' Anatomy of a Haiku at

My visuals are UP.
I do have a blog. I'll come up with some visuals. Actually, Curmudgeon, I'm not really sure what it is about. I have to come back to it to figure that one out--I just write and it either works or it doesn't, but I'm told that my poetry shows the dark side of the force!
I never was able to write a poem.
Mago - just glad to see you able to comment again! :-)
Weak attempts from me:
Cattle drink from ponds
mostly mud, not water. Drought.
We need some good rain.
Nothing I love more
than wet, dark Sundays when the
rain comes slow, steady.
My Plaguerizing attempt:
Waving wheat sure smells
sweet when the wind comes behind
Oklahoma rain
Pammie-kins - which one do you want to be the official one?
Hi Boxer and BIG DADDY! So glad to play Haiku Monday today - very exciting to have a guest judge! No big words here but I try to make up for that with charm! A visual and a bonus geography lesson are up at my site!
Rainfall in Seville
A tune makes long a's perfect,
Sing Fair Lady, SING!
How about that Aunty - TWO haiku inspired by Spain!
Scout - Nicely done! And your visual is perfect. Thanks for playing this week.
Good afternoon Boxer.
My you have a full house. Hope the weekend trip went well. Big Daddy has is job cut out for him.
A summers downpour.

@Comrade Czar: Мелодия имеет хороший бить и вокал сбалансированы с музыкой. Я дам ему 7.
Hi Boxer! Two Haiku from opposite sides of the prayer coin:
From the Farmer:
Crops dying in vain
waiting on drops from Heaven
thank God for the rain
From the Sailor:
Speeding to a bay...
trying to outrun a squall
please God, hold the rain
(this one for judging!)
@Karl: Brilliant.
Благодарю вас, сэр
